between heaven & earth
Between Heaven and Earth explores the liminal space where material culture meets spiritual reflection. Inspired by Edo-period aesthetics and my first trip to Japan in 2019, these textiles honor the tactile intimacy of woven checks, katazome florals, and the precision of discharge printing, with motifs like the peony and kikko that I hope will serve as vessels of cultural memory and resonance.
Returning from Japan, I immersed myself in the writings of Jun'ichirō Tanizaki and Yukio Mishima, whose works explore transformation, the fleeting beauty of moments, and the navigation of culture across geographies and time. Sitting by the fire at my house in Topanga, reading their work and studying the historic textiles I had collected, this collection began to take shape. My hope is that these fabrics will carry forward the histories of labor and reverence, balancing bold motifs with delicate restraint and blending historical fidelity with contemporary relevance.
Rooted in the Japanese concept of ma (間)—the space where meaning resides—this collection inhabits a realm both tactile and transcendent. These textiles are acts of preservation and renewal, connecting threads across time and offering a quiet, profound stillness to anchor the everyday.
